How do I choose the right curtains or blinds?

To create window treatments that feel truly yours, Deborah will take you through a few key questions to begin.

  • The shape and style of a window is the first consideration when assessing covering options. In New Zealand, the most common types of windows in New Zealand are awning (hung from the top and open from the bottom); casement windows (hung from the side and open outward like a car door); sliding windows, bifold and bay windows (common in older houses). Increasingly picture windows and ‘tilt and turn’ windows are popular choices for New Zealand homes too.

  • This is where your intentions for the space are essential to understand. If it’s a suntrap in winter, destined for lazy Sunday afternoons with a book, but also needs to be darkened on long summer nights, there are a number of curtain or blind options you could consider.

  • Something else to consider with curtain and blind selection is the solar gain that is generated from double glazing, now standard in New Zealand. With larger windows and minimal eaves now popular in contemporary house design, the right window coverings can prevent excessive indoor heat accumulating.

  • Floaty white linen curtains might not be the right choice when sharp claws or chocolatey fingers are on the move! Ease of opening and closing the blind or curtains is also a consideration for young ones.

  • If choosing curtains, the heading style is as important as the fabric choice in defining the mood of a room. It will inform the amount of space a curtain will occupy when fully drawn open.

  • Generally, you want to keep the style of your curtains or blinds consistent from room to room so this is an important decision to make early on. A traditional home with a very high stud and ornamental features might suit voluminous velvet curtains that puddle on the floor, while a more contemporary home might suit a crisp, clean blind design, or a simple, low-volume curtain that sits neat against the floor.

  • With decades of experience in designing curtains and blinds, Deborah can help you make the most out of your budget. For example, a Roman blind is a great way to include an expensive designer fabric in your space, without needing a lot of it.
